Cosmopolitan Wilderness (works on paper)

December 13, 2008 – January 4, 2009

Reception: Saturday, December 13, 6 - 9 PM

GO NORTH gallery is very pleased to present a solo exhibition of work by artist Anne Beck entitled “Cosmopolitan Wilderness.” This is Ms. Beck’s first solo show with the gallery, which runs from December 13, 2008 to January 4, 2009. A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, December 13, from 6 to 9 pm. In conjunction with Brooklyn Arts Press, Ms. Beck’s newly published art monograph, “state,” will also be available for sale at the gallery.

Anne Beck’s works are visual journals that delight in detailing the organic transformation and disintegration of ecological and social structures. They could be described collectively as a kind of dream epic, if our planet could dream, providing the viewer with a good mixture of whimsy, pertinence, the off-kilter and the apocalyptic. Underlying her work is a belief that the personal and universal do not operate exclusive to one another, a reality that is vital to our ability to communicate and connect. She’s apt to borrow archetypes from contemporary culture (science, philosophy, literature, nature, et al) in an effort to document the adjoining of personal and collective histories.

Anne Beck paintings and works on paper have been exhibited nationally, most recently at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, DC, the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art, and are was included in The Drawing Center’s Viewing Program. Ms. Beck is co-publisher of Acid to Zinc, a serial artists’ book, and is a core member of The Printmakers Left, whose most recent project, Exquisite History Volume 1: The Land of Wandering, was published in 2005 by the University of Virginia Press. Ms. Beck has received fellowship awards from the Virginia Center of Creative Arts, Vermont Studio Center, Can Serrat in El Bruc, Spain, and Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus in Schwandorf, Germany, and recently was Barstow Artist-in-Residence at Central Michigan University. Ms. Beck holds an MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute and a BA in Printmaking and Art History from the University of Virginia. She lives and works in California.
